Welcome to Fox Glacier
Fox Glacier is situated inland on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island, in the Westland National Park. The glacier itself is 13 kilometres long, falling 2,600 metres between the Southern Alps and coast.
The great outdoors
Fox Glacier is situated in the Westland National Park, which extends from the Southern Alps' highest peaks to a remote part of the west coast. Westland National Park also borders the Mount Cook National Park. A trip to Fox Glacier, one of the world’s most accessible glaciers, six kilometres away from Fox Glacier Township will not disappoint. Take a guided trip on the glacier, to experience its ice formations. Trips without guides are not recommended, due to the dangerous nature of the glacier and the possibility of ice and rock falls.
A range of scenic flights is available over Fox Glacier, with helicopter flights lasting from 20 minutes to 40 minutes. There are also charter flights on offer that are of 20 minutes duration to several hours. Flights can be taken from the glacier encompassing the Mount Cook National Park and the nearby Franz Josef Glacier. At a length of 13 kilometres, the striking Fox Glacier provides a stunning spectacle from the air that cannot be replicated by viewing from the ground.
Aside from more than 60 glaciers, there are scenic lakes in the park as well as a rainforest and, by the coast, the remains of gold mining towns. There are treks available into the park but a moderate fitness level is advisable. Another fabulous attraction is the Glow Worm Dell. Take a guided tour to see hundreds of glow worms lighting the way.
Hearty meals
Although small, Fox Glacier township offers a few places to eat before embarking on a glacier trip or strenuous hike. Cook Saddle Cafe and Saloon is probably the most prominent dining venue, situated in the heart of Fox Glacier township. It offers traditional western-style meals in a relaxed setting, with an open fire in the colder months and outdoor seating when it is warm. A children's menu is also available.
Accommodation on offer
There are various hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts around Fox Glacier, with varying degrees of amenities and price, ranging from the basic and inexpensive to the more luxurious and costly. Budget travellers are also well catered for with a wide choice of backpacker accommodation. Fox Glacier accommodation can offer some stunning views, depending on its location, including views of Mount Cook.
