Westport Guide

Westport Guide

White gold miners first settled Westport, located on the South Island of New Zealand, in 1861, and the surrounding area has many famous tourist attractions.

Top sights

  • Coaltown Museum – This fascinating museum provides a slice of life as it was lived by miners and their families in the coalmining Buller District, and has several interactive displays and events.
  • Cape Foulwind – A famous local headland named by Captain Cook, Cape Foulwind is home to a breeding colony of fur seals, and its Star Tavern is the nearest to Australia.
  • Hector Pottery – Producers of cuisine and lifestyle hand-made pottery since 1974, this is a magnet for discerning collectors as well as tourists with an interest in arts and crafts.

Dining

There are many restaurants, bars, cafes, bistros and fast food outlets in Westport, and the town is justifiably famous for its fine wines and world-class cuisine. The surrounding land and sea provide an abundance of fresh produce which is cooked to perfection and washed down with a robust chardonnay or cheeky sauvignon blanc. The Denniston Dog Cafe & Bar is decorated with local memorabilia and serves up hot and cold meals in relaxed surroundings, whilst the Yellow House Cafe and Restaurant does local dishes with an American twist.

Events

There are fun and cultural events held throughout the year in Westport. The Zirka Circus, with the world’s biggest and best motorbike 'Globe of Death', does a show here for two days each December, and other events include the Interislander Summer Festival Westport Trots for a family day at the races. There are various regular folk music events too, with the indie musician Flip Grater often returning to the Alex and BB annual tour.
