Hokitika
Founded as a site for gold mining, Hokitika is situated on the west coast of New Zealand's South Island. Mount Cook, the highest mountain in New Zealand can clearly be seen from the town's main street on a clear day.
Hokitika provides a great base for outdoor adventure. The sand and pebble beach is wild, stunning, and perfect for a stroll at any time. Venturing slightly further, a few minutes drive out of town, visitors can find rainforests, lakes and hiking routes through the Southern Alps, as well as extreme kayaking rivers. Fascinating wildlife such as Bellbirds, Pukeko, Fantails and Black Teal can be observed nearby, while Blue Ducks swim in the rivers of the Alps.
Take a scenic flight with spectacular views of Mount Cook as well as some of New Zealand's other high peaks. Some of the country's largest glaciers, the Fox and Franz Josef glaciers can also be seen from the flight. Alternatively, fly to the spectacular Milford Sounds or one of several other destinations on the west coast. Flights take off from west coast airports including Hokitika, and informative on-board commentary is supplied.
There is more to see and do at Hotikita. Visit the Wilderness Gallery for a display of works by photographer Juergen Schacke. The pictures on display capture the spirit of the region and provide a great overview before venturing out to explore. Hire a rental vehicle and take a scenic drive to Westland National Park, Arthur's Pass or around Lake Kaniere. Dine at the Ocean View Restaurant and Wine Bar, while watching the sunset over the sea from the restaurant's elevated position above the beach.
The Hokitika Wildfoods Festival, which is held in early March each year, is a gourmet extravaganza based on the natural food sources or bushtucker of the west coast. Tasty, novel and healthy wild food is the emphasis. Wild food markets are also held downtown during the course of the festival. The Wildfoods Festival is about more than just food and drink though and entertainment is provided continuously throughout the afternoon, along with a competition to find the best-dressed festivalgoer.
