Franz Josef Guide
A city that was carved by ancient glaciers, there is no mistaking the beauty Franz Josef has to offer. Those who love the outdoors will feel right at home when they find themselves surrounded by mountains, rainforests, beaches and - of course -glaciers.
You can get up close to one of the world’s greatest geological wonders - Franz Josef Glacier - in the Westland Tai Poutini National Park. Walking, river and helicopter tours are offered in the area.
Or, experience the natural beauty of Franz Josef on your own by hopping on a river kayak and cruising down the gentle waterways. Along the way, you'll see as many as 20 glaciers, including the Franz Josef Glacier.
For something a little warmer, head to the Glacier Hot Pools. Nestled in the local rainforest, this retreat offers massages and soothing warm pools filled with glacial water, surrounded by natural fauna.
If you want some yummy food and a nice pick-me-up, head to the Blue Ice Café. A local hotspot, the Blue Ice Café offers delicious food as well as great coffee.
Westland Tai Poutini National Park has more to offer than just the Franz Josef Glacier. Inside, you'll also find ski touring, mountain biking, and gold fossicking.
If you want to go deep into the New Zealand wilderness, you can do it at the White Heron Sanctuary. Guided tours will take you through the area's hills, rivers, and lakes.
There are a variety of Franz Josef hotels right in the middle of town and further away, in more secluded areas. You'll find most of them along the Franz Josef Highway.
If you want a unique view, there are hotels that overlook the Franz Josef Glacier. As an added benefit, that will only put you a short distance from the Hot Pools.
