White Island, Southland, New Zealand
New Zealand is home to many active volcanoes but the only active marine volcano is White Island. It was so named by Captain Cook in 1789 as the island always seemed to be enveloped in white steam which Cook didn't realise was volcanic. The Maori name for the island is 'Te Puia o Whakaari', which means 'The Dramatic Volcano.' It lies some 30 miles off the coastline of the Bay of Plenty in the North Island.
You can visit White Island by boat or helicopter and walk right inside its main crater. It's been compared to a moonscape with steam, sulphur and a lot of hissing and rumbling.
