White Island, Southland, New Zealand
White Island is located in Dunedin, New Zealand and is considered amongst the city’s main attraction , with visitors from all over New Zealand and other countries. New Zealand is home to many active volcanoes but the only active marine volcano is White Island. It was so named by Captain Cook in 1789 as the island always seemed to be enveloped in white steam which Cook didn't realise was volcanic. The Maori name for the island is 'Te Puia o Whakaari', which means 'The Dramatic Volcano.' It lies some 30 miles off the coastline of the Bay of Plenty in the North Island.
You can visit White Island by boat or helicopter and walk right inside its main crater. It's been compared to a moonscape with steam, sulphur and a lot of hissing and rumbling. If you go by boat, you'll probably have dolphins swimming alongside. For short stay visits to Dunedin and accommodation close to White Island, compare our range of Hotels, Apartments and Motels.
